ARTIST LAB | Rhythm, Roots, and Remembrance
with Cheri Stokes
Saturday, August 23
11am — 2pm | Mark Morris Dance Center, Brooklyn, NY
Admission: $20
Come move, create, and tell your story.
Join us for a hands-on, movement-based workshop where we’ll explore how personal stories, music, memory, and history can all live in the body. This workshop invites you to tap into your own experiences—whether it’s a favorite song from your childhood, a place that shaped you, or the energy of 80s and 90s Hip-Hop culture—and use them to inspire movement and connection.
Together, we’ll play with improvisation, storytelling, and choreography in a relaxed and welcoming space. You’ll leave with new tools for creating movement, a deeper understanding of how your own history can shape your art, and hopefully, a little more joy in your body. Expect a mix of guided movement, creative prompts, solo reflection, and informal sharings. Emerging to mid-career choreographers, dance artists, and interdisciplinary performers are encouraged to attend.
Please wear comfortable clothing to move in, 90s theme attire is suggested! Don’t forget to bring water!
Cheri L. Stokes is a 2024 Hi-ARTS CRITICAL BREAKS Artist Alumn. While in residence, she concentrated on the development of Around the Way Gurl: The Block Party.
“Using auto-ethnography to inspire movement and text, this work will examine the ways in which the duality of femininity and masculinity, intergenerational movement aesthetics, innate movement patterns, generational and community values, and Hip-Hop culture have all influenced my identity and the women from my community during that era.”
