Colin Sherer

There is so much power in how we speak and I know that the Journey 2 Journey program will help me tap into this. As a Brooklyn born-and-raised artist, I wish to experience many more aspects of life, all while cohesively honing my craft. Maybe, the little (big) Black boy from the photos I see can now raise his hand and say, “Colin Sherer! That’s Me.”

I am Colin Sherer, a Nuyorican poet inspired by the person in the mirror yesterday, last month, and even five years ago. I am very different now. I did not write poetry five years ago. Instead, I sat on my couch: 175 pounds at age 13, playing Fortnite six hours a day. I also wore hoodies to hide. I was attempting to hide from my ears the whispered word the “fat.”

Consider this: I am now 16, a lean bodied, artistic mind. So, how? Now? I even did a poetry slam just yesterday at the Guggenheim! So, how? Now? I realized that I could be better.

The first poem I ever wrote handed me a branch of inner peace. Alongside healing my body, and improving my health, I began to express myself through art. Which is why I do it A LOT.

You are your own responsibility, and your own reason. I sought, and still seek, not only an understanding of myself, but also the streets I walk on, and even people I have never seen before. Now creating poetry has taken hours getting comfortable with me. But when it comes to my other interests like skateboarding and photography, I am learning more about myself through others. What I seek is to master the art of communication. That’s Me.”
