The Peculiar Patriot

September 13 - October 1, 2017

Hi-ARTS and National Black Theatre presented the world premiere of The Peculiar Patriot, written and performed by Liza Jessie Peterson and directed by Talvin Wilks. The Peculiar Patriot re-centers the national conversation about the prison industrial complex and mass incarceration around the often unacknowledged destructive impact it has had on women, and by extension, their families and communities.



Blood At The Root

April 20 - May 15, 2016

Hi-ARTS and The National Black Theatre presented the New York City premiere of Penn State Centre Stage's Production Of Blood at the Root by award winning playwright Dominique Morrisseau (Skeleton Crew, Detroit '67) and directed By Steve Broadnax. Inspired by the Jena Six, the play examined the miscarriage of justice, racial double standards, and the crisis in relations between men and women of all classes and, as a result, the shattering state of black family life.
