MEXODUS: Virtual Artist Discussion with Brian Quijada & Nygel D. Robinson

Join us for a live Virtual Artist Discussion with Brian Quijada & Nygel D. Robinson, as they discuss their time as CRITICAL BREAKS residents and the development of MEXODUS.

MEXODUS is a two-man, live-looped, Hip-Hop show inspired by the estimated 4,000-10,000 enslaved people in the southern part of the United States who pursued freedom in Mexico instead of looking north. This under-told chapter of the Underground Railroad is an exploration of Black and brown bodies standing together against oppression.

Through their innovative conventions of live looping and multi-instrumentalism, Brian Quijada & Nygel D. Robinson hope to pay homage to the little-known estimated four to ten thousand slaves who became free Mexicans and the Mexicans who welcomed them into their country.

This sharing is part of our CRITICAL BREAKS Summer Series, featuring the developing works of Germono Toussaint, and creative duos Zachariah Ezer & Dominique Rider, and Brian Quijada & Nygel D. Robinson. Artists will invite audiences to engage with their works in development in the form of artist talkbacks, readings, and/or open rehearsals both in person at Hi-ARTS and online. All events are free and open to the public!
