Hi-ARTS creates innovative educational performance and visual art experiences for students led by the highest level of instruction. Our performance education program pairs students with writing mentors, directors and choreographers to produce original works.  Our visual arts education program pairs students with accomplished teaching artists and graffiti style masters to create their own modern day masterpieces. The programs culminate in a public performance and a gallery exhibit respectively.

Journal to Journey

presented by Urban Word NYC & Hi-ARTS NYC

A 5 MONTH-LONG THEATER INTENSIVE THROUGH WHICH YOUTH EXPLORE THE FIELD OF DRAMATURGY AS CONNECTED TO THEIR WORK AS POETS AND WRITERS

The Journal to Journey Program, now in its 15th year, is a pre-professional youth development theater program presented by Urban Word NYC & Hi-ARTS NYC and led by a director and writing mentor. Young artists participate in a five-month process to write, stage, perform and present their own one-person show at two professional theaters, Hi-ARTS and New York Live Arts. The aim of this competitive program is to offer substantial, holistic support and creative experiences that bridge spoken word, hip-hop theatre and physical theatre in the development of an original ensemble show. By linking youth poets with professional theater artists we increase opportunities for achieving life goals, learning new skills, and collaborating creatively with other artists.
