Launched by HI-ARTS, MIXTAPE MOVEMENT was a year-long sonic collaborative project conceived, curated, and compiled by DJ Reborn with the goal of sonically documenting and reflecting upon historic times we found ourselves in during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic, alongside social and political protest. Through public invitation, Hi-ARTS community members were invited to submit songs, sound bites, and sound memos in response to a prompt, thereby creating the materials for the mixes below.

Volume #3

An Open Invitation to the Foster Care and Adoption Community

In collaboration with Hi-ARTS SKY LAB alum, Benjamin Lundberg Torres Sánchez, Volume #3 served as an open invitation to the foster care and adoption community to submit materials.

Through Benjamin’s creative practices, they invite folks to consider systems of family regulation, surveillance, and policing like adoption, foster care, child protective services, mandated reporting, etc.⁠

DJ Reborn

DJ Reborn has been moving audiences for more than a decade with her mellifluous blend of soul, hip-hop, reggae, house, Latin, electronic, and Afrobeat. She has worked alongside the Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, John Legend, and India Arie; appeared on BET’s Rap City, and served as the 2004—2005 international tour DJ for Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam. DJ Reborn is based in Brooklyn and is an educator with Urban Word NYC.
